ISO 45001 standard

The ISO 45001 standard is related to occupational health and safety management systems. Its objective is to establish a reliable reference framework that improves worker safety while facilitating the management of organizations.

Occupational Health and Safety Management System

According to the International Labour Organization, work-related accidents or occupational diseases cause nearly 2.8 million deaths worldwide each year. ISO 45001 is therefore intended to be a standard that makes it possible to reduce risks related to work or the workplace, and thus improve working conditions.

The organization that implements an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHS) must remedy certain non-conformities that can cause damage or injury, as well as improve the well-being of its employees.

Risk analysis & management

To achieve improvements in workplace safety, ISO 45001 provides a structuring framework for controlling risk factors, primarily with regard to the interaction between workers and their business environment. This environment is often synonymous with risks and ISO 45001 is intended as a tool to analyze, prevent and limit them.

One of the new features of ISO 45001:2018, which replaces OSHAS 18001, is that it takes into account workers' opinions on their business environment. They are therefore fully involved in the continuous improvement of their own workplace safety.

Plan, act and check

The implementation of the ISO 45001 standard is based on 3 main steps :
  • Planning: First, by defining the context of its activities and setting out the main OHS principles and then analyzing the risks inherent in its activity - the organization must also ensure that it has the resources necessary for a continuous improvement process.
  • Action: the action plans defined must be detailed and then implemented, generally by a dedicated pilot, in order to reduce risks on a factual basis. It is also about planning processes for certain emergencies.
  • Checking: the organization must choose the points to check, including those related to regulatory requirements, and define how to measure improvement. The actual verification will be reflected in internal audits.
